Airtherm Engineering have recently completed the new installation of a natural ventilation system at Tipton Hospice for local firm Cockbill Grant Limited (based in Rugeley, Staffordshire). Airtherm beat our local competition based on our knowledge, experience and technical ability providing detailed design proposals for the client’s consideration.

The Wind-iVent units selected for the project were based on technical information provided by the client, which consisted of room volume measurements, occupancy level, heat gains and the geographical location of the building. Our computer aided calculation package selected the optimal size to match the information inputted by our technical engineer, ensuring optimum performance of the application and satisfaction for the client.

All of our natural ventilation systems are designed in line with current publications such as CIBSE guidelines, AM10 Natural Ventilation in commercial buildings and Building Bulletin 101. Case Study - John Roan School, Greenwich

Airtherm have installed a new Wind-iVent natural ventilation system at John Roan school in Greenwich, London. Founded in 1677, the John Roan School is one of the oldest state schools in the country, with a rich and distinguished past.

Having recently received funding under the government’s Building Schools for the Future initiative, the school is on the cusp of opening the doors on one of the UK’s most innovative, fun and flexible learning environments - a new, modern sports hall project, where the natural ventilation system was installed.

The complex will house four badminton courts, one indoor tennis court and a basketball and volleyball court with space for 5-a-side football. There is also a separate activity studio where Zumba and dance classes can be held, which will take PE lessons to a new level at the school. A natural ventilation solution like the Wind-iVent will ensure a constant fresh air supply for occupants, the efficient removal of unwanted CO2/stale air and a suitably heathly environment for activity.

The John Roan has been dedicated to serving the community of Greenwich for more than 335 years and
Airtherm Engineering have been proud to partake in the development of the brand new, state-of-the-art 7,600m2 building at Westcombe Park. This, along with a fully redeveloped facility at Maze Hill will make John Roan one of the largest schools in the United Kingdom.

Wind-iVent Installation
The Wind-iVent units are lifted by a specialist crane company who work closely with our on-site engineers. The systems are mounted onto the 3mm thk aluminium fully insulated roof upstands. Each unit is fixed and secured to not only the upstand but internally using universal type fixings.
Once each unit is secured a low-leakage uPVC damper and 24v actuator is fitted, followed by the insulated plenum and an internal powder coated grille to complete the system.

Case Study - Coppice Primary School, Wythall (2nd Phase)

Airtherm have already completed the 1st phase works by installing two ‘Wind-iVent’ Systems to the newly completed single storey class rooms.

The 2nd phase fix features a further six 1.2msq units for the Hall area, which will be used mostly by the Church, and a further six 1.1msq units serving the Classrooms.

The new installation of fourteen natural ventilation systems for MVS Limited had been designed and carefully selected from the room data sheets provided, ensuring adequate ventilation rates for the pupils at Coppice Primary School.

The natural ventilation systems have been designed in line with all current publications such as CIBSE guidelines, AM10 Natural Ventilation in commercial buildings and Building Bulletin 101. The terminal sizes have been selected by our new computer aided software ‘Wind-iCalc’ and fully conforms to the CIBSE requirements.

Consultant: Stewart Associates
Client: MVS Limited
Sector: Education & Religion
Products: Wind-iVent Systems
Equipment: Natural Ventilation Systems
Application: Balance Terminals

Product Range
The Airtherm “Wind-iVent” Class ‘A’ is a natural ventilation system operating on established aerodynamic principles. As external wind flows around the terminal itself, positive and negative pressure areas are generated. On the positive side air enters the louvres of the terminal and is directed down through the internal vanes into the room below allowing a fresh air supply to be delivered, and on the negative side the stack draws the stale unwanted air which is expelled through the terminal into the atmosphere.

Manufacture
The units are be manufactured in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001, and to suit the architectural and design parameters as indicated in the design specification and drawings. Internal airways are to be protected by incorporating anti-bird mesh to the terminal louvers. Our systems can be manufactured to achieve 99.8% effectiveness (class A) when tested with a simulate rainfall of 75mm/hour and wind speed of 15m/sec based on a free area of 55%.

Installation
Units can be installed on almost every roof including flat, pitched and even on the roof apex where appropriate. The roof fabric of commercial applications has bearing on the openings and roof plates that are required to install the systems competently. We offer a roof plate solution for all situations, including self mount flashings and curb mount flashings with suitable upstands.

The features and advantages of the Wind-iVent:

  • A fresh air supply for workers - proven to increase productivity & reduce staff sickness
  • Naturally ventilated - reduce your energy costs and carbon footprint without the need for mechanical ventilation
  • Night time purge of stale air - creating a fresh working environment for staff the following morning
  • Better control of building temperature and CO² levels
  • Free cooling

Airtherm Engineering's track record of successful and efficient projects was demonstrated by the recent installation of our 'Can-iVent' island kitchen canopy system at Colegrave Primary School in Newham, London.

The project involved the successful liaising between Fowler Martin, AC Preou Limited and Newham Council (consultant, contractor and client, respectively).

Airtherm Engineering Limited liaised with both the consultant and the contractor at all times, attending site meetings, providing comprehensive technical submission, including calculations and drawings for approval prior to manufacture of the equipment.

Project Details
Consultant: Fowler Martin
Client: AC Preou Ltd
Sector: Education
Products: Can-iVent System
Equipment: Cooking Equipment
Application: Input & Extract System

Product Range
Our product range extends from simple condense canopies, extract only, island or wall mounted canopies, through to our air injection island systems allowing both input and extract. If required, the input air can be pre-heated for additional internal staff comfort during the cold winter months. All products can be configured to suit each individual application.

Manufacture

All canopies are manufactured from 304 (En 1.4301) or 316 (En 1.4401) stainless steel where specified and are suitably braced to prevent product distortion. All joints are welded and polished.

Our Canopies are cut, punched and folded into sub sections and factory assembled by means of computer controlled seam welds, and non-visible mechanical fixings. Systems are manufactured to the strict guidelines of DW/172, British Standards and conform to HSE for commercial kitchen ventilation. Wall mounted or island canopies can be manufactured to meet almost any dimension but typically 1000mm to 8000mm long. The system ductwork is manufactured and installed to incorporate cleaning and maintenance access doors to fully comply with DW/144 & TR/19 standards.

Canopy Lighting
The units are designed and manufactured to deal with a wide ranging and varied commercial application and can deal with humidity, condense rich, as well as hot and greasy environments.

These units are normally recessed into the canopy ceiling providing easy cleaning and maintenance of the unit exterior. This also helps to greatly reduce the build-up of grease and other contaminates usually associated with the commercial kitchen environment.

Recessed Incandescent Units
• Approved for use in commercial kitchen applications
• Meet with guidelines for DW172 & HSE Guidelines
• Satin finished stainless steel matching faceplates for matching hood interiors
• Tempered prismatic glass diffusers

Fire Suppression System
The island kitchen canopy was fitted with a R102 Ansul fire suppression system which conforms to NFPA standards 17, 17a and 96 and is UL300 listed by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc .

The system was supplied with nozzles, detectors, cartridges, liquid agent, fusible links, pulley tress and elbows as required for the specific commercial kitchen application at Colegrave Primary School, Newham, London.
